Center History

VDRC has started in July 1, 2003, via Creative Research Initiative (CRI) program from Korean government. Prior to VDRC, it was CAD/CAM Lab. primarily working on various kinds of applications using geometric modeling and manipulation.

When it started, we targeted to develop a theory and algorithm for computing the Voronoi diagram of higher dimensional spheres, and identifying applications in either molecular biology or material science, or both. With increasing experiences, we have noticed that the structural molecular biology is more appropriate applications for this theory. More importantly, the structural molecular biology field has long been requiring this theory regardless one noticed or not.

Terminating CRI in June 30, 2007, VDRC continued as National Research Lab (NRL) program from Korean government with almost identical to but this time more practical targets than CRI. We focused our effort on biomolecules in the three-dimensional space. In the course of study, we identified and completed the theory of the quasi-triangulation and the beta-complex and completely implemented into a software. Then, application softwares based on these theory demonstrated extremely powerful capabilities outperforming contemporary commercial softwares.
