The Workshop on Algorithms in Bioinformatics covers research in all aspects of algorithmic work in bioinformatics and computational biology. The emphasis is on discrete algorithms that address important problems in molecular biology, genomics and genetics, that are founded on sound models, that are computationally efficient, that have been implemented and tested in simulations and on real datasets and that provide new biological results. The goal is to present recent research results, including significant work-in-progress, and to identify and explore directions for future research.
Topics: Original research papers (including significant work-in-progress) or state-of-the-art surveys are solicited in all aspects of algorithms in bioinformatics and computational biology, including, but not limited to:
Exact and approximate algorithms for genomics, genetics, sequence analysis, gene and signal recognition, alignment, molecular evolution, phylogenetics, structure determination or prediction, gene expression and gene networks, proteomics, functional genomics, and drug design.
Methods, software and dataset repositories for development and testing of such algorithms and their underlying models.
High-performance computing approaches to computationally hard problems in bioinformatics, particularly optimization problems.
Submissions: Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract or full paper of at most 12 pages in LNCS-style (for more information see the LNCS Author's instructions page. The paper should contain a succinct statement of the issues and of their motivation, a summary of the main results, and a brief explanation of their significance, accessible to non-specialist readers. Proofs omitted due to space constraints must be put into an appendix to be read by the program committee members at their discretion. Electronic submission is highly recommended; procedures for electronic submission will be available on the WABI 2004 web site. In case of problems with access to Internet, it is possible to submit 6 copies of the paper to one of the program committee co-chairs.

Hard copy submissions must be received by April 16 or postmarked no later than April 9 and sent by airmail to be considered. Simultaneous submission to other conferences with published proceedings, is not permitted. However simultaneous submission to journals is allowed -- if published in the journal, such contributions will be published as short abstracts in the WABI proceedings. Authors simultaneously submitting their work to a journal must inform the WABI program committee chair at submission time. Authors are expected to present their accepted papers at the conference.
Proceedings:
Accepted papers will be published in the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science/Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics. Previous proceedings of WABI, 2001 in Aarhus, 2002 in Rome and 2003 in Budapest, appeared as LNCS 2149, 2452, and 2812 Accepted contributed papers will receive an allotment of 12 pages in the proceedings.
NEW: IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
The best WABI papers will, after agreement with the authors, be published in a special issue or section of the IEEE/ACM TCBB journal.
